Maternity Photography in Dallas–Fort Worth

Open pasture at golden hour, and a lakeshore at sunset.

I'm BK Bennett, and I photograph expectant mothers across Dallas–Fort Worth. This is the one session where the thing you are photographing keeps changing week to week, so the date matters more here than it does for anything else I shoot. Most people come out once the bump reads clearly in a frame and walking across a pasture is still easy. Leave it much later than that and the session turns into an endurance test in the Texas heat, which is a shame when the photos were supposed to be the calm part. I live in Greenville, just east of the metroplex, and I shoot out through DFW and the towns ringing it, so pick the field, the lake, or the patch of land that means something to you and I will come to it.

The gallery below is two sessions and one look. An expectant mother in a flowing sage halter dress and turquoise jewelry, photographed first in open pasture at golden hour and then beside a lake while the sky went pink. Her partner is in several of the frames in a felt cowboy hat, his hands over hers. A red velvet Victorian settee got hauled out into the middle of a dry field for the afternoon, which is the kind of trouble that pays for itself the second you see it in a photograph. Some frames are shot low from the grass so the skirt fills everything under the sky, and one is straight down with both of them lying in the pasture. All of it is outdoors and all of it is late in the day, because that is when this part of Texas stops looking washed out.

Nobody needs to be good at this, and almost nobody is. Being pregnant is a strange thing to be photographed in the middle of, and most people show up unsure what to do with their hands, which is my problem to solve and not yours. I direct the whole way through and I keep shooting between the poses, because the picture people end up hanging is usually one nobody was braced for. Wear something with weight and movement in it. Open wind does more for a long skirt than any amount of structure does, and a dress you can breathe in beats one that only looks good standing still. Boots work, bare feet work, and jewelry you already wear looks more like you than anything bought for the occasion. If you want your partner in the photos, bring them. If you would rather these be only yours, that is just as common.

Spring and fall are the easiest months to be outside for this, green pasture in one and gold in the other. July and August are survivable only at the very end of the day, and being heavily pregnant in that heat is the best argument there is for a sunset start. Winter pasture is bare and quiet, and some people want exactly that. A maternity session also tends to be the first of several. The baby arrives, and then there is a whole first year of it, which is on the baby and toddler page. Newborn and full family sessions are listed on the services page. Send me your due date and a rough idea of where you picture standing, and I will tell you how the land is likely to look by then.

Common questions

How far along should I be when we shoot?+

Far enough that the bump reads clearly in a photograph, and not so far that walking out to a field is hard work. If you tell me your due date I will tell you which weeks I would aim for, and we can move the date if the pregnancy has other ideas.

Is this studio work or outdoors?+

Outdoors, all of it. The sessions in this gallery were shot in open pasture at golden hour and on a lakeshore at sunset. If you want a studio look, say so up front and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person for it.

Can my partner be in the photos?+

Yes, and several of the frames here are both of them together, including one shot straight down with the two of them lying in the pasture. Plenty of people also want the session to be only about them, which is just as normal.

What should I wear?+

Something with weight and movement in it. The dress in this gallery is a long sage halter that catches the wind, worn with turquoise jewelry and tooled boots, and it works because she already owned it. Bring a second option if you cannot decide.

Where do maternity sessions happen?+

Anywhere in Dallas–Fort Worth, and in the farm country east of it where I live. Open land and water are what this work is built on, so your own pasture, a field somebody will let us stand in, or a lake you already love all work.

Do you photograph the baby afterward?+

Yes, and plenty of families carry straight on into the first year. Sitting up, first steps, and the first birthday are on the baby and toddler page. Newborn and full family sessions are listed on the services page.
